How trademark registration in Russia works
- Search and filing
I run the clearance search, choose the Nice classes, prepare the application and file it with Rospatent. The filing date becomes your priority date.
up to 8 business days - Formal examination
Rospatent checks the documents and the fees (Russian Civil Code, Art. 1498).
about 1 month - Substantive examination
The examiner checks the mark against the grounds for refusal in Art. 1483. If there are doubts, an office action (examiner's notice) is issued and I prepare the reply. Arguments filed within 6 months of the notice are taken into account (Art. 1499(3)).
- Decision to register
After a positive decision I pay the registration fee.
- Certificate
The mark is entered in the State Trademark Register. The electronic certificate is issued upon registration; a paper one is optional.
The total time depends on Rospatent's workload and the number of office actions. The average is 8–12 months. More on each stage in the guide to registering a trademark in Russia.

Regulation on Patent and Other Fees (Government Decree No. 941 of December 10, 2008, as amended on September 23, 2025). The filing and examination fees are paid at filing, the registration fee after Rospatent's decision. A paper certificate costs CNY 250.
Rospatent's official fees are set in rubles. They are converted to yuan here at the Bank of Russia's official rate of October 11, 2026 (RUB 12.67 per CNY 1) and rounded; the exact amount is stated in the invoice.
What I need from you
- Full name and address of the applicant, as on the business license (营业执照)
- An image of the mark: JPG, PNG or a vector file
- The goods and services you need to protect. Your own words are fine; I will choose the classes
- A power of attorney for the patent attorney. I will send a template
- For a Chinese priority claim: the number and date of the first application in China
Good to know
Who can apply
A legal entity or an individual (Russian Civil Code, Art. 1492(1)). The mark can be registered in the name of a Chinese company or of a Chinese citizen.
The list of goods cannot be expanded after filing
Protection covers only the goods and services named in the application. New items require a new application, so we agree on the list before filing.
A short list is cheaper
Since October 4, 2025, each item over 10 in one class costs an extra CNY 40 at examination and the same again at renewal. Include in the application only what you sell or plan to sell. Surplus items can be removed later, but by then the examination fee has already been paid.
The ® symbol only after registration
You may use ® next to the mark once it is registered in Russia (Art. 1485). Protection lasts 10 years from the filing date (Art. 1491).
Questions about trademark registration in Russia
How do I pay the fees from China?
You pay one invoice in Chinese yuan (CNY) by international bank transfer. I pay Rospatent's official fees on your behalf, so you do not need a Russian bank account.
What language is the contract in?
Russian or English. We sign it before work starts and it sets out the scope of services and the price.
Can registration be sped up?
Yes, through the paid accelerated search at FIPS (the Federal Institute of Industrial Property), which brings the examination down to roughly 1–2 months. The FIPS fee starts at CNY 8,200 per word or figurative mark and is paid separately. I will calculate it for your application.
How many Nice classes do I need?
As many as the classes your goods and services fall into, counting what you sell now and what you plan to sell in Russia. The fee grows with every class, so I keep the list to what you actually need.
What happens if Rospatent refuses?
Before a final decision the examiner sends an office action. I prepare a reasoned reply, which is included in the fee. If the refusal stands, it can be appealed to the Chamber for Patent Disputes; that is priced separately.
Do I need to register the mark in Russian letters?
Not necessarily. But if the product is sold in Russia under a Russian name, it is safer to register the Cyrillic version as well. A Latin-letter registration protects against similar marks, but you would have to prove that a transliterated version is similar. A separate Cyrillic mark avoids the problem.
